Busy morning I got up, showered, had breakfast, fed my cats, started some laundry and went to the store. I just finished cleaning the kitchen and now itapos;s time to make pita bread, two bean dips, and prep vegetables for roasting for tonightapos;s dinner. I make dinner once a week for a few friends and because one is a vegetarian I generally just make something meatless. Well, I think this is the third week so itapos;s not like Iapos;ve been doing it forever, but it is becoming a fun tradition.

You know, doing this whole homemaker thing has given me a new perspective on traditional gender roles. Itapos;s not like the man was off in the coal mines and the woman was at home twiddling her thumbs. This stuff is work and requires some skill to keep from wasting money. And now we have appliances to help us with the hardest things, like laundry and dishes. I also donapos;t have to haul my own water from the creek. So I have a newfound respect for our foremothers, and I feel a bit resentful of all the PC opinions I was raised with that "womens work" is something to look down on and avoid at all costs. Iapos;m not saying every woman should stay at home and cook everything from scratch. Iapos;m also not saying that itapos;s not drudgery sometimes. Iapos;m just saying it has a definite benefit and itapos;s not as easy as it seems. Also, for me, itapos;s not any less rewarding or enjoyable than most of my jobs for pay have been.

I really like making bread items from scratch. The Kitchenaid is good for this, although kneading by hand can be fun too. The pizza crust on Friday was really good, although by the time we bought all of the toppings it wasnapos;t much cheaper than buying pizza. I think it was the cheese. I think we used way more mozzarella than we needed on the pepperoni one, so we can scale that back next time. The veggie one had goat cheese on it. I love goat cheese.

We are doing really well on our food budget for this month. So far we are at $303 for food and non-food grocery, and $146 for going out. We can probably go till the end of the month without another trip to the store, but weapos;ll see. Itapos;s still a bit higher than I would like but way better than the $1000 it was when I was still working. And still technically within our budget since for groceries Iapos;ve allowed $60/week.

What are your budgets/expenditures for food? Or do you keep track?

Our weekly reflection for October 20-24:

Spirit and Body
The spirit and the body carry different loads
and require different attentions.
Too often we put saddlebags on Jesus
and let the donkey run loose in the pasture.

-- Rumi

Contemplation: Take a few moments to notice the load your body is carrying this week. How is it different from (or similar to) the load your spirit is carrying? How can you resolve to care for yourself so that you're appropriately balancing the loads on both body and spirit?

Florence hasnapos;t been the best for sleeping. Between the Chianti Classico making me pass out before waking suddenly and the loud Americans who have loud heartfelt conversations (of which we can hear every word) at 4am in the room next door, my delicate cycle has only enjoyed 3 hour stretches this week. Luckily, espresso is cheap, quick, delicious, and effective.

Yesterday we enjoyed time at Ufuzi gallery with gazing at Bottichelli and a delightul spell at Academia, where the David was even more amazing than expected. After lunch and a siesta, we met some Seattle neighbors that we randomly happened upon for a wonderful dinner.

Dinner dinner dinner. Italy is making me round again. But I couldnapos;t possibly resist all this wonderful food and wine. Itapos;s true that they just donapos;t do it anywhere else like they do it here. Such delicious, honest, simple, well crafted food from perfect local ingredients. Truly the Pacific NorthWestapos;s delicious grandfather in cuisine. Itapos;s amazing to me that Italian women are as beautifully thin as they are. I donapos;t even partake in all four courses and still feel my jeans shrinking.

Tomorrow we embark on the last leg of our italian journey with a trip to Rome. I am absolutely stoked to see everything Rome has to offer. Mass, dead popes that I fancy, old ruins, huge art... Wonderous I am hoping we can find a day to train out to Pompeii... It would be sad to miss such an amazing site while weapos;re out here. This is a once in a lifetime trip, and I want to drink everything in.

(6:22am. 40 minutes until the alarm rings. Poor B, privy to my tossing and turning. Iapos;ve moved to the bathroom to write, since Iapos;m not able to be still. )

Good morning Morning here, anyhow. All you stateside should get to bed now Sleep better than I do

Palm Harbor University defeated host school Bradenton Southeast 25-18, 25-16 in the Gold Division consolation game to take third place out of 16 teams at the Lady 'Noles Volleyball Invitational.

The Hurricanes advanced to the Gold Division semifinals after finishing pool play 3-0 with victories over Sarasota Riverview, North Port and Lake Wales. In the semis, PHU dropped a 25-21, 25-22 decision to eventual champion Niceville.

"We were OK, but we could have played better," PHU coach Tara Kuk said. "Niceville was one of the best teams we've played all year. At moments we looked really good. At other times, we couldn't convert our opportunities like we're capable of doing."

PHU's Cassie Roy was one of six players named to the all-tournament team. Morgan Kosterlitz was an honorable mention selection.

Youapos;ve been in this program for over a month now. Whatapos;s stood out for you most so far, and why? When are you happiest, and why?

Initially, I thought research was going to entail interesting and constant discoveries. After a few workdays, I found it tedious and rather bland. However, as more workdays passed, I began to appreciate the whole research process. It takes a lot of patience and perseverance to accomplish finding the answer to the research question. This research program is TRULY a learning experience because of the questions that we constantly think about. What stood out for me the most so far is evaluating middle school studentsrsquo; sheets. We spend a lot of time modifying the coding scheme because there are many ambiguities that must be clarified. Discrepancies between our coding will, therefore, eventually become minimized and approach a near perfect agreement.

I am the happiest when all the girls meet up on Wednesdays. When I have my own individual time coding, it gets pretty lonely. =(. Our group meetings are a way for us to get more things accomplished by interacting and discussing our findings. Yoursquo;d be surprised what kind of things we discover such as little misunderstandings and disagreements within the studentsrsquo; texts. We conclude by either coming to an agreement, or we discuss our coding issues with our mentor.

This week, for your RA journal, think a bit about your faculty memberapos;s
research design. What are the biases/limitations of your data/methods? Is the evidence youapos;re gathering useful or are you just amassing it? Have you encountered challenges to your advisorapos;s perspective from other researchers?

I believe that the main limitation to our data and methods, as shallow as it sounds, is the grant money our research program receives. As our mentor mentioned before during his mini-interview with us research assistants, there are so many portions that must be attended to that there must be a sufficient amount of workers and materials. This is necessary to find an answer the most efficient way possible. Secondly, other limitations include the possible hindrance from the middle schoolersrsquo; learning experience by acknowledging the fact that theyrsquo;re being recorded. Biases are inevitable because of the coders that modify the coding scheme. How can we determine whether the students are actually making a sophisticated answer as opposed to a common sense answer? Regardless of its complexity, we have to decode their thought processes. We try to make the coding scheme as reliable as possible by depending on a group of people. After the coding process is over, I wonder what the next step is going to behellip; I can see that coding will establish a basis for finding the answer, but how do we really find the most efficient way that middle schoolers can learn science?

The evidence we gathered is useful because we are currently decoding the middle schoolersrsquo; thought processes and are constantly updating the coding scheme. We are already in the process of digitizing tapes and copying DVDs. We have encountered challenges to my advisorrsquo;s perspective by the ambiguities we find when evaluating the studentsrsquo; sheets. For example, when students refer to oxygen, are they thinking of oxygen at the molecular level or are they just looking at it as air? How do we know if studentsrsquo; thought processes are sophisticated enough? Itrsquo;s difficult to score students especially when some responses go in between categories. Do they deserve a lower or a higher grade? These questions are answered when we have group discussions.

If anyone is looking for me Iapos;ll be lying down. I had another one of those "heart attack" feeling things at work and am all worn out.

To put it in perspective, it feels like ... Well, like when you have water flowing through a tube and you squeeze it, and it makes that "rushing" sound in the tube ... It feels like that sound, along with a weird pause of heartbeat feeling. Like my heart suddenly had to push really hard for some reason. Then I end up with my heart racing for a long time afterwards and being all light-headed. Not fun. Iapos;m sure itapos;s just a random muscle on my large intestine twitching.

But I have to lie down and rest. I feel like I ran a marathon.

This is my favourite time of the year. I can step into a caf and be overwhelmed with calmness. I brought my Dreambook with me - "little blue" as I like to call him. He and I exchanged thoughts, and he let me in on a little secret: Surround yourself with people who believe in you.

And I look ahead, a stray leaf glides by, itapos;s a deep red hue - like a pulsating heart drifting away. And I hear Norah Jones singing: Come away with me in the night; come away with me; and I will write you a song...

And write about people (you) and capture their (your) awkward beauty in words as best as I can. Ismileat mytranslation - people whose language I do not speak, but whose hearts Ionly hope to understand.Heapos;s a free verse. Sheapos;s a lyric.Theyapos;re a short story. And a piece of me and myincomplete writing. I tuck a fallen leaf between the pages.

Red. Red. Drifting souls.
